To celebrate the history of Fellsmere, the City has established a self-guided walking tour of its downtown historic district. Most of the historic sites in the district are concentrated within a block or two of Broadway, the historic commercial corridor of Fellsmere.

The historic Marian Fell Library as well as the historic houses on the tour are located on streets west of Broadway because they were built close to the initial water system along New York Avenue that came from Artesian Well No. 1 at the west end of town. These historic houses are within reasonable walking distance of Broadway. Please note that all historic houses are private residences and not open to the public. They can only be viewed from the public road right-of-way, and not on the premises.

The map provided in the “Historic Sites of Fellsmere, Florida” walking tour brochure depicts each of the 20 historic sites along the tour and provides a photograph and a brief history of the site. A QR code appears on the front of the brochure that provides access to the City’s website. The website will direct you to a video of each site where the history of the most sites is narrated by Fellsmere Historian Richard B. Votapka dressed as Edward Nelson Fell. Linda Votapka, dressed as Anne Fell, assists in narrating the Women’s Suffrage and Fellsmere Historical Marker site. The Fells were the founders of Fellsmere. (Videos by videographer Ryan Rafuls)

The website also contains a more in-depth history of each site replete with historical as well as up-to-date photographs. The City has brochures printed in Braille available for the visually impaired in accordance with the American Disabilities Act. The brochures in Braille are available at City Hall weekdays between 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The City encourages visitors and residents alike to enjoy the walking tour to learn about the history of Fellsmere and some of the revealing and unusual things that occurred in years past. As a self-guided tour, you may enjoy the tour at your convenience and please patronize any of the sites open to the public such as the many historic restaurants and stores or stop by City Hall (the old Fellsmere Public School) and/or the Marian Fell Library. We even have some historic churches that will certainly save a seat for you! This brochure will serve as your souvenir from the City of Fellsmere, the oldest city in Indian River County, Florida.
